[STRATEGY] When I first met Dan Goodwin the owner of Provident 1031. He informed me that he had not had much luck working with marketing companies and that I probably wouldn’t work out but that I had come highly recommended and he wanted to see for himself. Dan had just invested a significant amount of time and money in a brand-new website and investment portal that did not work. I was actually stunned when I saw the site. The site looked as if it had been created by a third grader. I actually felt sorry for Dan, realizing he had been taken to the cleaners.
I listened as Dan described for me his niche service, trying to absorb all the technical finesse of his services. I made copious notes and recordings of our conversation which I reviewed several times following our meeting. Dan’s goal was simple – he wanted a site that would generate leads 24/7 and he wanted to provide a great online customer experience.
The obstacles to getting there were obvious to me from the start. First, he just invested a lot of money on a website that did not work. Second, he was one of many in this niche and was invisible to search engines,. Third, though Dan was great at what he did, online he looked like everyone else – boring.
The one thing that stood out as a huge positive to me was Dan’s enthusiasm and winning attitude. You knew he was a winner. I saw it in his eyes that Dan was wanting to do what it took to win. Another thing I learned was that Dan was an excellent writer and was publishing content for a syndicated publication each month. That is where the lights went off for me and I knew we could leverage his syndicated publication to build his online authority.
Still, Dan’s company looked like all his competitors. I remember telling Dan that we need a differentiator we can build on, and I wanted to think about it. Then it dawned on me after watching Sara Blakely teach a masterclass on self-made entrepreneurship, that Dan had the same personality and dynamics of Sara and would perform great in front of a camera and that we should do a masterclass teaching about the 1031 Exchange. I presented my idea to Dan, and he liked it, but it was a significant undertaking, and he wanted to consider it further.
A few hours later, my phone rang; it was Dan. He said, ‘Let’s do it.’
I then did my research and due diligence and met with my team. I laid out our objectives which were as follows:
This is a quick snapshot of the proejct when we started. Today we have built a lead generation machine. We still have a lot of work to do to make Dan one of the top 3 leaders in tax-smart investment strategies but we will get there. It truly is teamwork and it is fun working with Dan and his team. We all feel we are making a difference.

We narrowed that list down to visibility in the marketplace and came to our Top 20 list which we watch continually to determine if our marketing strategy is working or if we need to pivot based on either us losing visibility or a competitor gaining in visibility. Our top competitors today is five domains. Three are national Pilates chains and two are local. We then evaluate our content strategy on which content topics and keywords are going to give us the advantage over our competitors thus increasing our visibility. There are many other factors that go into this but this is where a good content marketing strategy begins.
